Families may request for their athletes to be assigned to an older league in House, however decisions to move athletes are at the sole discretion of the Age Group/League Commissioner. Occasionally, the Age Group/League Commissioners may recommend and request an athlete to be placed in a different age group and will do so upon the approval of the athlete's family.
**Potential to be Coed if not enough enrolled for the league. If COED there is also a potential to have more teams.
Reston Volleyball is open to any child who is 9 years or older on September 30 and is in the 4th grade. Requests for children younger than 9 years old as of September 30 must be submitted to the Age Group/League commissioner and will be considered on a case-by-basis where level of coordination, ability, maturity of the athlete and availability of spots will factor in the decision.
Registration is required for all participants, referees, and volunteers. Tryouts for Select are free, but HOUSE and Select Try Out registration is required prior to trying out. ALL 7/8 Girls Select players should register early for HOUSE to guarantee a spot in our league, this is the only way the player will be able to play in our league if player does not have a spot on the Select Team. Select will cost more than House. All registrations after March 1st, 2024, will incur a $25 Late registration fee and will be automatically put on a waitlist. If your child is placed on a waitlist, you will be notified by email if a spot becomes available. No fees will be taken unless a player is accepted and confirmed into the program.
HOUSE vs SELECT for 7/8 Grade Girls
up to 2x/week
No Skills required
No VB experience required, but must display intermediate to advance skills during tryouts; be coachable
More casual experience for those interested in learning the sport and playing with friends
Intense volleyball experience with a greater commitment; friend requests are NOT honored
Continuous Substitution, service re-dos (only at the 1st match), foot fault warning (only at the 1st match), consecutive serving cap, 2 point conversions for 3rd swing “kills”; equal playing time
Standard volleyball rules: positional substitution, no service re-dos for the whole season, foot faults called the whole season, regular point system, playing time is NOT equal nor is it guaranteed
To guarantee playing in our league, any athlete who does not get an offer on a Select team will be placed on a House Team as long as athlete is already registered in the HOUSE league.
NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND TEAMS:
Our aim is to have teams of 11-12 players in both House and Select. However, numbers will vary based on multiple factors to include current athletes registered, volunteers and gym availability. For House, friends are encouraged to sign up together - our motto is "stay together, play together"! For Select, athletes will be drafted and offered spots – no friend requests are honored.
We will not have a skills evaluation for ES and MS house volleyball leagues.
The Select Team will have tryouts in late February/early March. Click here for the tryout schedule.
· House Practice – 1-to-1.5-hour practice/1x a week in Reston or Herndon
· Select Practice – 1-1.5-hour practice/up to 2x a week in Reston or Herndon
Based on gym availability, weeknight practices may start as early as 5:30pm and go as late as 9:00pm. Times are dependent on multiple factors, including permits, coach availability and space availability. During registration clearly indicate days available for practice (coach and/or athlete), to prevent schedule conflicts. We will do our best to work with your family’s schedule.
Regular season matches will begin early April 2024 and continue until May 18th on Saturdays and potentially Sundays. The Select season may go longer depending on the other teams in our league. House matches are 1 hour long; Select matches are 1.5 hours.
PLAYING TIME ON MATCH DAY/LEAGUE RULES:
House: some league rules differ from “traditional” volleyball rules to foster growth and development based on grade level. House league requires athletes to have equal playing time – through continuous rotation or each player play at least 2 full sets out of 3 sets played.
Select does not have an equal playing time policy and games are match play (best 2 out of 3).
League rules will be provided to the coaches and will be published for families to access prior to the first match.
Reston Volleyball will provide team jerseys once the teams are formed. Players provide their own shorts, socks, kneepads (optional) and gym shoes.
Please consider volunteering to coach volleyball! We rely 100% on volunteers to coach teams. Volunteering to coach is not only needed to keep costs affordable, but it is also a significant part of our program’s structure, our athlete’s, therefore our community’s success. All head coaches selected may have one athlete play for free. Potential adult coaches and adult assistant coaches are subject to a background check. All High School aged coaches can fill volunteer hours. If you or you have a friend or family member over 18 interested in head coaching, or a high school student aged 15 and over interested in assistant coaching, please register here.
Training for coaches will be provided through virtual meetings, clinics, links, and documentation. Reston Hoops will inform coaches and assistant coaches about training opportunities and options.
REFEREES/GAME DAY VOLUNTEERS:
Sign up to be a paid referee in our Referee Registration portal. Prospective officials must be at least 15 years old and have prior volleyball experience. at the start of any given season to be eligible to referee.
About 2 hours of preseason (pre-match) training will be required.
Reston Hoops is run by unpaid volunteers, except for referees. Volunteers are always needed. Examples of volunteers needed are match day volunteers and age group coordinators as well as behind the scenes. These are unpaid positions but are much-needed and much-appreciated roles. If you would like to volunteer in another capacity other than coaching, please contact to our volleyball commissioner - [email protected].
Practices and games sometimes are cancelled by Fairfax County due to weather or special activities. Countywide cancellations are posted on Fairfax County television stations, or you may call the County sports Weather Hotline at 703-324-5264. We will do our best to inform you as far in advance as possible if it affects your practice or game, but please give us the grace that there are some unforeseen situations where the information is not provided to us to relay them to you.
Athletes who play in our league mostly reside in Fairfax County, however all are welcome. Players who reside outside of Fairfax County are required to pay an additional Out-of-County Fee assessed by the county ($50 as of 7/2023).
Thank you for visiting us! We hope to see you on the court soon.
