Reston House Basketball
AGE GROUPS:
Reston House league will group players according to their current grade in school.
Families may ask for players to be assigned to an older league. Decisions to move players are at the sole discretion of the Age Group Commissioner. Players may be placed in an older or younger grouping based on recommendation of the Age Group Commissioners and the approval of the family).
ELIGIBILITY:
Reston Hoops is open to any child who is 7 years or older on October 1. Children playing basketball for a public or private school during Reston Hoops season are not eligible. Players in the House league are prohibited from playing for any other organization’s Select/Travel team during the same season. For children younger than 7 years old as of October 1, the 1st/2nd grade Age Group Commissioner may approve the child to participate based on their level of coordination and ability. This will be determined on a case-by-base basis and is solely the decision of the Age Group Commissioner. Parents should bring the child to an evaluation session for review by the Commissioner.
NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND TEAMS:
Reston Hoops strives to have teams of 9 players each. However, numbers may vary based on current registration numbers. We will create teams based on registered players and volunteers.
COACHES:
Like most youth sports organizations in our area RYBL relies on volunteers to coach its teams. Please consider volunteering to coach or assistant coach your child’s team when registering. If you have a friend or family member over 18 interested in coaching please have them register via our volunteer tab.
RESIDENCE:
Most of our players come from Reston, Herndon, Oakton, Oak Hill, Vienna, Franklin Farm, and Great Falls. Players from outside of Fairfax County are required to pay an additional Out-of-County Fee assessed by the county.
REGISTRATION:
Registration is required for all participants and volunteers.
Registration will be open no later than September 1. A $20 Late registration fee will apply starting October 31st and will be charged per player. Wait lists may also apply starting in early-November. If your child is placed on a wait list you will be notified by email if a spot becomes available. No fees will be taken unless a player is accepted into the program for wait list players.
SKILLS EVALUATION:
A brief evaluation of each player’s skills is needed to competitively balance the teams within practical limits. Since skills can change markedly in one year, all children must attend one of the sessions. Please view our club calendar to see the upcoming evaluation sessions. Players only need to attend one (1) evaluation session.
GAMES:
Regular season games will begin in early December and continue until mid-March.
TEAM PRACTICES:
Practices are normally limited to one hour, one night per week. There may be league activities (practices/games) during the public school winter vacation period. Weeknights practices start after 500 pm. Times are dependent on multiple factors, including permits, coach availability and space availability. In the registration form there is a spot to indicate practice days to be avoided, if possible, to prevent schedule conflicts. We will do our best to work with your schedule.
PLAYING TIME:
Our goal is to have each player play a minimum of two quarters. Detailed rules for each age group are provided to each coach and are available for parent review.
REFEREES:
Reston Hoops trains and uses students, young adults, and parents as officials for all games except the high school boy’s age group where only adult officials are used. Referees are paid for their time. Prospective officials, at least 14 years old by January 1 of the current year, should sign up under the Ref Registration as a Referee. Returning officials will be contacted by email regarding training dates, but we do ask that you register as a referee in the system too.
CANCELLATIONS:
Practices and games are sometimes cancelled by Fairfax County due to weather or special activities going on in a particular school. Countywide cancellations are posted on Fairfax County television stations or you may call the County sports Weather Hotline at 703-324-5264.
EQUIPMENT:
Reston Hoops will provide reversible team jerseys once the teams are formed. Players provide their own shorts, socks, and shoes.
VOLUNTEERS:
Reston Hoops is run by volunteers, except for referees. Volunteers are always needed for commissioners, County certified Volunteer Building Directors, coaches, assistant coaches, scorekeeper/timers, and officials. Potential coaches or assistant coaches are subject to a background check. Training for coaches is usually provided by area high school coaches prior to the beginning of games. Reston Hoops will notify coaches and assistant coaches when details are known. If you wish to volunteer as a coach or assistant, please check the proper box when registering or register under the
volunteer tab.
